About us

The studio

Lazy Squirrel Labs is a one-man studio that was (unknowingly) founded by Matheus Amazonas in 2020. At the time, it wasn’t exactly a studio, but rather a name with the sole purpose of serving as a publisher for our first mobile game—Air Hockey. Called Sneaky Squirrel Labs at the time, it was supposed to be a one-project adventure that helped to fill the long hours of the COVID-19 lockdown.

In the months that followed the release of Air Hockey, I got interested into procedural mesh generation and started working on a small tool that eventually became Terraced Terrain Generator. Once its first version was ready to ship, I decided to recycle the publisher brand and release it under the same name. And just like that, the brand that was supposed to last one project was brought back to life.

Ever since, I have been working on improving our existing products in addition to developing and releasing new ones. In 2024, I decided to rename the brand to Lazy Squirrel Labs and to finally make the studio a reality, turning the personal side project into a professional business.

Lazy Squirrel Labs is driven by a passion for game development and for great, robust, quality software. We believe that developing games should be fun, but also taken seriously. We are based in Lyon (France) and have remote work with trust, professionalism and great communication at the core of our culture—traits we have refined whilst working in the industry remotely for many years.

The team

As a one-man studio, Lazy Squirrel Labs has its founder as the only team member: Matheus Amazonas (yours truly). Nice to meet you! I am a Brazilian game developer currently living in France. I have always been passionate about building, fixing, breaking and fixing things back again. First, there were toys. Later, computer hardware and software. Eventually, I invested my education on what I enjoyed the most and decided to start a bachelor’s degree in Computing Science at my local university—Universidade Federal de Sergipe.

During an exchange study in the USA at University of Nebraska at Omaha, I discovered game development and I have been hooked ever since. In the end of my exchange year, I interned at the local (literally across the street from my dorm) game company, SkyVu. After going back home and graduating, I worked as a game developer (SkyVuLumen Games) for a couple of years. Then, I decided to pursue a masters’ degree in Computing Science (Software Science specialization) at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

After graduating, I went back to game development and joined Fantazm, where I gained valuable knowledge in developing Virtual Reality games and experiences. After some time, I joined Fantazm’s sister company inMotion VR as a Game Developer, and I’ve been working there on the development of Corpus VR ever since—now as a Senior Game Developer.

Our projects

We take great pride in our work, and we are happy to showcase the projects that Lazy Squirrel Labs can call their own. The following projects were developed by us, for us. They are all open source and are available on our GitHub organization, so feel free to give them a peek—and give us a follower.

Air Hockey

Air Hockey is a 2D local multiplayer Android game with four match modes: highest score, best of score, time limit and endless. The project is open source and is available on GitHub.

Air Hockey was Lazy Squirrel Labs’ first project, back when we were still called Sneaky Squirrel Labs. It was recently re-published on Google Play as part of our rebranding efforts. You can download and play it for free, without any ads:

Terraced Terrain Generator

A sample image of Terraced Terrain Generator's capabilities, where 6 terrains are displayed: 3 spherical and 3 planar.

Terraced Terrain Generator (TTG) is a free, open-source Unity tool for the procedural generation of terraced terrain meshes. Its first version (1.0.0) was released in April 2023, and its latest version is 2.0.2. TTG is available on:

TTG’s development process was documented in the following blog posts:

Sphere Generator

A sample image of (ico-, cube- and UV-) spheres generated using Sphere Generator.

Sphere Generator is a free Unity package/plugin that generates spheres (UV, cube and icospheres) of arbitrary detail levels procedurally. It’s extremely useful when Unity’s standard sphere mesh doesn’t contain enough detail for your needs and/or you don’t want to restrict yourself to pre-generated meshes. Its first version (1.0.0) was released in May 2024, and its latest version is 1.1.1. It is available on:

The development of Sphere Generator’s icosphere support was documented in the following blog post:

Min/max Range Attribute

An animated GIF displaying Unity sliders built using Min/max Range Attributes.

Min/max Range Attribute is a bounded (i.e., with a minimum and maximum) range attribute for Unity’s Vector2 and Vector2Int fields that draws fields as min/max range sliders, easing the definition of bounded ranges on the inspector. Its current version is 1.0.3, and it is available on:

Our project pipeline is active, and the development of our next tool will start soon. Follow us on LinkedIn and Instagram to stay up-to-date on the latest developments, product updates and new releases.

Other projects

Our experience isn’t limited to titles we have released under the Lazy Squirrel Labs brand. We have worked on other projects beyond the studio’s catalog as part of both employment and freelance—and we have learned a lot from them. Our clients (some seen below) come from different industries and countries, including the USA, the Netherlands and Brazil.

The projects we’ve worked on were part of quite diverse domains that spanned from mobile entertainment to serious desktop VR and everything in between. A (mostly) complete project list is available here. When it comes to entertainment, we have worked on the following game genres:

  • 3D mobile First-Person Shooters.
  • 2D infinite runner.
  • 2D educational investigation.

When it comes to serious games, we have worked on projects of the following nature:

  • Virtual Reality (VR) applied to different fields: physiotherapy, education, heritage storytelling and social (hangout).
  • Online multiplayer turn-based strategy.
  • Farming (barn planning).
  • Real state (floor planning).

We believe that this varied experience (both technological, cultural and domain) puts Lazy Squirrel Labs in a unique position to excel at projects from different fields and with distinct needs.
